The Native American saying it takes a village to raise a child is repeated so often that we lose sight of the truth behind it.
In the past, families lived in close proximity to their extended family; grandparents, aunts, uncles and an army of cousins were always close at hand. Whenever parents needed practical help or some sound advice, they always had someone supporting them, sharing their experience and lending a helping hand.
Although many of us no longer have that communal support and our relatives may not live close by, we still derive comfort and support from visits from and to family and close friends. In the situation we find ourselves in at the moment, may of us are missing that regular, physical contact with our loved ones.
The sense of isolation is possibly stronger for parents of young children, and children may not understand why they can’t visit and hug their grandparents or friends. Suddenly, we are faced with a whole new set of challenges that we realise we’re not well-prepared for. There is no advanced training for parenting, and nobody was prepared for our new reality. We must all learn as we go along.
The practical aspects of parenting your child in today’s circumstances are easy to master with some planning. But what worries you most is making sure your child is still happy, confident and secure in these very uncertain times.
Storytelling offers the perfect opportunity for parents to explore big feelings with young children who may not have the words or knowledge to be able to describe what they are feeling. And when parents share meaningful stories with their children, they can help little ones understand, and come to terms with, feelings of uncertainty and loss.
Now, if you are anything like me and most parents, you are thinking, ‘This is great but how on earth do I put this into practice in my family?’ Most of the parents who join our programmes have the same concern.
They also ask us where they can get hold of good stories to share with their children. Don’t worry! We’ve got you.
Start by joining us for a live and free masterclass in our Facebook group, The Story Solution for Parents.
Invite your friends too! The more the merrier.
During this class, I will show you how to share stories with your children and which stories are perfect to get you started.
Let’s do this! Let’s build a beautiful and supportive village for each of our children to grow up in.
